The vines at Coste-Ubesse face “Ubesse = Ubac”, which means north in Occitan. It is on two adjoining plots totaling 2ha85 that Philippe Reboul and Jean-Luc Saumade work in harmony with the nature that surrounds them with certified organic farming practices. We are in Pic Saint-Loup*, in Languedoc. This tenement located in the commune of Saint-Mathieu de Tréviers in Hérault is a stony clay-limestone hillside on cracked marls. This orientation tempers the intense heat of the summer sun and shelters the plants from cold and sudden winter episodes. “Everything here promotes the peaceful growth until full maturity of the grapes that make my wines,” says Jean-Luc. The Syrah, one of whose plots was planted in 1971 by Jean-Luc's grandfather, is surrounded by arbutus, holm oak, Alep pine and cades, cistus, rosemary and the aromatic “garrigue”. On the estate, grape varieties are Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Sauvignon Blanc. We are with Jean-Luc and Philippe, whose meeting naturally brought together two common destinies. “My grandfather Eugène, wandering through his vineyards, taught me to observe the cicadas, as if married to the bark of an arbutus tree, an holm oak or a large Alep pine. », remembers Jean-Luc Saumade. Philippe Reboul, whose father and grandfather had an agricultural career, oriented his professional life quite differently. “Many years ago, when I had to choose my scholarship orientation, considering an agricultural career was not acceptable to my parents who knew too well the precariousness of these professions and I had no say in the matter. » Yet always, without really expressing it, I had projected myself into the role of my father. Deep down I had to come back to it so that the order of things could be restored. Thanks to Jean Luc who reached out to me, it’s done. » *The legend of Pic Saint-Loup “Three brothers, Guiral, Alban and Thieri Loup, in love with the beautiful Bertrade, left for the Crusades without knowing which of them she would choose as her husband. When they returned from the Holy Land, their beloved had just died. They decided to live as hermits at the top of the three neighboring peaks: Thieri Loup on the highest, Guiral and Alban on the other two. On March 19, they lit a fire in memory of Bertrade. In memory of Thieri, who was the last to disappear, the highest massif was named Pic Saint Loup. » - source Syndicat of AOP Pic Saint-Loup
