Perched at 450 meters above sea level, between the Monte Amiata mountains and the sea of Monte Argentario, just 20 km from the coast, Poggio Cagnano is an emerging independent winery, driven by the energy and vision of Alessandro (42) and Eleonora (28). This complementary duo are the dedicated stewards of a 4-hectare organic vineyard, nestled in the heart of a unique terroir shaped by the Macigno Toscano — an ancient soil composed of sandstone (arenaria) and clay shale (galestro). Its composition — 75% sand, 20% limestone, and 3–5% clay — gives rise to wines that are fresh, saline, and finely structured. The grape varieties they cultivate are true to Tuscan tradition and the Mediterranean climate: ???? Vermentino, Ansonica, Sangiovese, Alicante, Ciliegiolo, with vines aged between 10 and 20 years. In the cellar, the work is pure, precise, and respectful: Spontaneous fermentations; Malolactic fermentation carried out on all wines; Minimal intervention; Total SO₂ content < 30 mg/L The wines of Poggio Cagnano express the quiet strength of the Maremma and the finesse of the human touch. A new voice among Tuscany’s great wines — not to be missed.
