South of Noto, in the limestone soils of the southern tip of Sicily, in an area called Buonivini, Valeria and Corrado Gurrieri cultivate this land, belonging to the family for four generations. At Tenuta La Favola, everything is put in place to preserve biodiversity with the use of renewable energies and a certified organic vineyard. “We believe that agriculture and wine are culture, history, hopefulness, patience. That the vine is life. » This way of thinking comes alive with multicultural projects, artist residencies for the Bridge Art project and support for the community. The philosophy is to produce wines that meet three fundamental parameters: balance, identity of the grape variety and terroir. It is precisely with this in mind that the harvests are manual, the vinifications are spontaneous and the aging of some of the wines takes place in sandstone “containers”, rather than wood, with constant microporosity, to have a maturation that preserves the varietal and terroir factors as much as possible. In the vineyards, Valeria and Corrado have been committed for years to protecting the ancient native varieties of Nero d'Avola, Moscato and Frappato. All their actions are considered to maintain a balanced ecosystem and to reduce interventions to a minimum. Ecological compensation zones have been established (i.e. areas with dry stone walls, large and fruit trees, aromatic herbs, native vegetation, etc.), in which natural enemies can develop to fight vine pathogens. With the introduction of the Bacillus Pumilus bacteria and microalgae, they also want to induce better plant resistance to diseases. Although La Favola is located in a hot and arid area, grassing is carried out between the rows to improve the structure and fertility of the soil and eliminate surface erosion phenomena. La Favola also has a negative footprint on CO2 emissions! Its photovoltaic panel system produces more energy than it consumes. All residues from the processing of grapes and olives are reused as soil amendments. Tenuta La Favola is also proud to be part of VinNatur, Federazione Italiana Vignaioli Indipendenti and EcoGruppo.
